GRINNELL, IA -- Ted Barkema, 74, a longtime resident of Grinnell and husband of the late Alice Barkema, a Maytag Co. employee for 21 years, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Grinnell General Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Burial will be in Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma. Memorials in his name may be left at the funeral home. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

GRINNELL, IA. -- Theodore H. Barkema, 74, of Grinnell died of a heart ailment and kidney failure Tuesday at Grinnell General Hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Smith Funeral Home here, with burial in Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma. Mr. Barkema, a Meservey native, moved to Grinnell 60 years ago and retired as a truck driver for a local lumber yard. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion and Eagles Lodge.

Surviving are three daughters, Joyce Eilander of Albia and Janet McCammant and Judy McCammant, both of Burlington; his stepmother, Nellie Barkema of Belmond; two sisters, Marvel Stadtlander of Sheffield and Jean Ostendorf of Klemme; a stepsister, Arlene Swenson of Detroit; four brothers, Harvey of Forest City, Marvin of Klemme, Leo of Mason City and Bud of Belmond; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Friends may call until service time at the funeral home.
