Former Slater Resident Dies at Des Moines

Amos Walker, a long time resident of Slater and vicinity, died at his Des Moines home Saturday morning after a long illness, nearly two years. Funeral services were held Monday, from the Hamilton Funeral Home at Des Moines at 1 o'clock and the Bethlehem cemetery at Slater at 2:30. The services at Des Moines were in charge of his paster, the Rev. Frederick Weetz of the St. John's Lutheran church. They included a sermon by the paster and two vocal solos, "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "In the Garden," sung by Hibbard Sager, assistant pastor at the church. Evangelist Malmin sang a solo, "Sunrise Tomorrow." Rev. Sager spoke the committal words. There was a large attendance and many lovely floral remembrances. The pallbearers were Amos and Thomas Wagner, Edwin Berg, and Olaf Anderson of Eagle Grove and Lowell Soderstrom and John Walker of this locality.

Amos Walker was born in Norway, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Evein Walker, Dec. 9, 1863. He was six years old when they came to America. They located on a farm southeast of Sheldahl, where Amos grew to manhood. He was married to Emma Knutson in 1896. To them four children were born, William, Clarence and Ray and a daughter, Sylvia, who died. His wife died in 1905. In 1908 he married Helen Torvaag. They lived on the farm until 1914, when they moved to Slater at which time Amos entered the real estage business. They moved to Des Moines in 1927, where he continued in real estate work until his health began to fail him three years ago. He is survived by three sons, William of Slater and Ray and Clarence of Kelley. Also a brother, Andrew, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Berg, both of Eagle Grove. He left five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and many othe relatives and friends.
