Irene Clare Nelson was born on September 25, 1923, at Mabel, Minnesota to Guy and Minnie Solseth Austin. She received her education in Mabel, graduating from the Mabel High School. Irene attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa for two years and earned her Teaching Certificate. She taught at the Vernon Township School near Renwick, Iowa for 2 years. While there she met Richard Nelson. They were married on June 28, 1947, at Mabel, Minnesota. The couple lived for 4 years in Webster City, Iowa and in Winona, Minnesota for 1 year. They started farming in the Corwith and Eagle Grove, Iowa areas and then settled on a farm north of Renwick in 1960, where they farmed for 29 years. Irene and Richard retired in 1989 and moved into Humboldt. Irene was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Renwick, Iowa, where she was active in the U.M. W. and had served as President. She also taught Sunday School. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, fishing, spending winters in Arizona and just being a farmer's wife.

Irene died on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt. She was 83. Surviving are her husband, Richard of Humboldt, Iowa and her 2 sons, Richard A. Nelson, Montezuma, Iowa and Jay Nelson and wife, Kathy, Renwick, Iowa. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, Staci McCaustland and husband, Matt, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Dr. Holli Nelson-Bruce and husband, Bob, Chandler, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Ross and her brother, Ellsworth Austin.
