Anita M. Whipple, 80, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 31, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery.
Anita M. Thompson, was born on December 1, 1921 in Belmond, to Richard and Matilda (Sjoberg) Thompson. Anita attended school in Belmond and graduated from the Belmond High School in 1939. She then attended the Hamilton Business College in Mason City. On September 29, 1947, Anita was united in marriage to Gerald Duane (Red) Whipple in Trenton, Missouri. The couple made their home in Belmond. Anita worked a few years at the P & G Grocery and later at Iowa Electric Light and Power Company where she worked for 18 years, retiring in 1982. Anita and Red loved to travel and after retirement they spent many winters in Las Vegas. She liked to travel to bowling tournaments with Red. Anita was a wonderful cook and especially enjoyed baking cookies for her family and was well known for her chocolate cake. Anita also loved reading and embroidering dishtowels, doing counted cross-stitch, and quilting. She was a baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Cubs. She was also an Iowa Hawkeye fan. Anita wrote poetry, which she kept in a notebook. Anita was very proud of her grandchildren and they meant the world to her. Anita was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald in 2001; two brothers; and one brother in infancy. Anita is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Joe Moore of Plymouth; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Lois Whipple of Belmond and Dennis and Linda Whipple of West Jordan, Utah; six grandchildren, Rod, Roxanne, Rick, Jason, Tyler and Jodi; ten great-grandchildren; mother, Helen Nelson of Belmond; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Dory Thompson of Mason City, Duan and Linda Thompson of Belmond and Jack and Marlys Thompson of Mesa, Arizona; two brothers-in-law, Leslie (Whimp) Whipple and his wife, Shirley of Belmond and Jim Wood of Greensboro, North Carolina; three sisters-in-law, Betty Thompson of Belmond, Ruth Thompson of Florida and Iola Whipple of Mason City.
