Elizabeth “Betty” J. Underberg, the daughter of John Cyril and Mary Patricia (Dunn) Jindrich, was born May 17, 1925, in Swaledale, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating in 1944. Betty attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and received her two year teaching certificate in 1946. She taught elementary school in both Blairsburg and Livermore, Iowa. On July 23, 1949, Betty was united in marriage with Irwin H. Underberg of Livermore at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Swaledale, Iowa. The couple made their home on the ranch in the Livermore area and in Swaledale, before moving to Eagle Grove in the fall of 1958. To this union eleven children were born: John, Jane, Helen, Valerie, Amy, Dan, Tricia, Sandra, Carol, Kay and Joan. Betty was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of St. Judith’s Circle. Betty will be remembered as a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who loved to spend time with her family, bake, cook, quilt, garden and praying for those whose needs were placed on her heart. Betty died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at her home in Eagle Grove at the age of 81 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin in 2006; parents; daughter, Carol in 1981; grandson, Michael Callahan in 1991; two brothers, Jack and Bob Jindrich and one sister, Maggie Jindrich. Survivors include ten children: John Underberg and wife Jacque of Eagle Grove, Dan Underberg of Eagle Grove, Jane Barz and husband Dave of Tripp, SD, Helen Tressler and husband John of West St. Paul, MN, Valerie Condon and husband Ed of Boone, Amy Wilhite and husband Mike of Boone, Tricia Underberg of Odebolt, Sandra Cherry and husband Jim of Eagle Grove, Kay Poppen and husband Brian of Eagle Grove and Joan Callahan and husband John of Stedmann, NC; 28 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Catherine Ann Larsen of Clear Lake, Martha Davis and husband John of Tuscon, AZ and Mary Patricia Danielson of Brush, CO.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 9, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Father Chris Podhajsky officiating. Visitation is today from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
