Esther M. Boxwell, 98, a resident of Silvercrest in Anamosa, died there Tuesday, April 10, 2007, after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Laurie Riley will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 5 to 7 tonight at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include a brother, Edwin Hanson of Santa Rosa, Calif. Also surviving are many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973; her parents; three brothers, Walter, Roy and Fred Hanson; and two sisters, Ruth Bentley and Bessie Hanson.
Esther was born in Wright County on Nov. 13, 1908, the daughter of May K. and Hans Christian Hanson. Esther married Willard "Bill" Boxwell on May 23, 1937. They lived in Springville and then moved to Anamosa in 1942. She received her early education in the Wright County rural schools and graduated from the Goldfield High School, and later from the University of Northern Iowa, then known as Iowa State Teachers College, in 1931. She taught school for 39 years - first in rural schools of Iowa and then in the Springville Consolidated Schools at Springville. The last 30 years she taught were in Anamosa. She was a member of the Anamosa United Methodist Church, 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, and member of the Concord Round Table Study Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Camp Courageous or the charity of your choice in Esther's name.
