Jerald L. “Jerry” Anderson, 80, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 7, 2006, at his home. Jerald Leonard Anderson was born to Ed and Annetta “Josie” (Bjondahl) Anderson on Aug. 20, 1925 in LuVerne, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Goldfield, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1943. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Goldfield and later, moved with his family to rural Wadena. Jerry married Bonnie Gottsman on Oct. 22, 1949 in Dorsett, Minn. They lived in rural Wadena; Tucson, Ariz.; Deer Creek, Minn., where they owned the Corner Café; Ray, N.D.; Chokio, Minn., where he managed the liquor store and sold insurance; prior to coming to Detroit Lakes, where he was the district manager for Woodman Accident and Life Insurance prior to owning Custom Signs from 1969-92. Jerry was presented with the Honorary Chapter Farmer Award by the Frazee Future Farmers of America (FFA) in 1995, was on the Becker County Fair Board, and was given the Fair Builder Award. Jerry loved his family, especially his grand and great grandchildren; doing family genealogy; using the computer; playing the harmonica and guitar; his coffee club; bargain hunting; and garage sales.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Anderson of Detroit Lakes; a son, Jimmie (DeAnn) Anderson of Frazee; four daughters, Carolyn (Clair) Wenger of Detroit Lakes, Joan (Rev. Mark) Buchhop of Grand Forks, N.D., Vivian (Marvin) Anderson of Frazee and Linda (Jim) Dammann of Schuyler, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceding Jerry in death were his parents; a brother, Wayne; and a sister, Blanche.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday), with a memory sharing and prayer service at 7 p.m., all in the David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes; visitation will continue at the church for one hour prior to services on Thursday. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Dan C. Abrahams officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by Jess-Omundson Post 1676, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Detroit Lakes. The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family.
