Carolyn Kay Smith, 62, of Meservey, died on Thursday, August 11, 2005, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Monday, August 15, at the Immanuel Reformed Church, rural Belmond, with Pastor Rob Ford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Carol Severson, was the organist and Gary and Velda Steenblock sang. Don and Alvin Braner were ushers. Casket bearers were Eugene Pals, George Wenzel, Larry Pals, Herb Greiman, Larry Severson and Herb Basener.
Carolyn was born on March 27, 1943 in Manilla, the daughter of Robert and Mary Ella (Schnuettgen) McCaffrey. She attended the Manilla High School and the Stuart School of Cosmetology in Sioux City. Then she worked as a hair stylist in Forest City. Carolyn married Robert Smith on December 27, 1963, at the Immanuel Reformed Parsonage. She and Robert spent ten months in Japan when he was in the military service. Then they made their home in the Belmond and Meservey areas. Carolyn was a hair stylist in Belmond and then spent fifteen years at the school as a head cook. Due to her health, she retired from the school one and a half years ago. Carolyn enjoyed cooking and was always looking for new recipes. She had a knack for decorating with flowers, food, lace and antiques, which she enjoyed shopping for. Carolyn valued spending time with her family, campouts, flea markets, back-road sight seeing and gardening.
Survivors include her husband; children, Kim (Mark) Soma of Belmond, Steve (Devin) of West Branch, Roy (Monique) of Cedar Rapids, Kerri (Dave) Pals of Belmond, Brandon of Belmond and Bryan of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren and great-grandchild, Ashley, Sarah, Katelyn, Makayla, Jenna, Rebecca, Andrew and Brooklyn; mother, Mary McCaffrey of Denison; sisters, Karen Brockelsby of Ankeny and Marilyn (Pat) Stoll of Denison; and brothers, Roger of Denison, Mark (Jan) of Red Oak and Daryl (Mickey) of South Sioux City.
