Paul E. Hickman, died on Friday, October 7, 2005, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 11, 2005, at the Luick Auditorium, Belmond-Klemme High School, with Pastors Pat Kennedy and David Wiersbe officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery with military rites. Don Dye gave the eulogy. Judy Watne was the pianist. Special music was provided by Paulette Andrews and Tim Smith. Casket bearers were Ray Johnson, Jim Meyer, Dave Gildner, Dave Kuhlers, Paul Spade and Dr. Joe Griffion. Honorary casket bearers were the Belmond V.F.W. Ceremonial Unit

Paul was born on May 21, 1925, the son of Robert and Reca Hickman. He attended the Ashton Public Schools, graduating in 1943. Paul entered the U.S. Army in September 1943 and served for 39 months, 22 of those in the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1946 but was called back into the army during the Korean War. Paul married A. Marie Zevenbergen on August 24, 1949 at Ashton. Paul graduated from Morningside College in 1952, majoring in history, minoring in physical education, and earning a secondary teaching certificate. He received a master's degree in social science in 1965 at Northeast Missouri State (Truman State). He taught junior high at Madrid for one year and 32 years at Belmond. Then he was a substitute teacher for 15 years. Paul was a life member of the National Education Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served on the honor guard for over 25 years. He also served on the board of the Belmond Retirement Apartments for over 25 years. He was a charter member of the Belmond Bible Church and later joined the church affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church. He served on the board and was song leader for 40 years.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Kruse; and grandson, Dennis Andrews. Survivors included his wife; daughter, Paulette (John) Andrews and their daughters, Wendy (Nik) Nielsen and Krisha (Joe) Serrie; son, David (Joan) Hickman and their children, Kristen and Matthew; son, Scott (Angie) Hickman and their children, Jeffrey and Jessica; daughter, Roxanne (Dennis) Schlader and their children, Cody and Ciarah; and sisters, Lois (Richard) DeBoer and Joyce (Gerald) Behrens.
