Alice Flanagan, 86, died on Sunday, November 6, 2005, at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston following an extended illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, November 10, with burial in the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond. The family will greet friends on Wednesday evening, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home.

Alice Elizabeth, was born in Britt on October 10, 1919, the daughter of Roman and Virgie (Brubaker) Buterbaugh. She graduated from the Alexander High School in 1936. Alice married Neil V. Flanagan in 1938. In 1942 the family moved to Belmond, where Alice lived until 1998 when she moved to Karrington Cottages in Waterloo, and later to the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. Alice assisted Neil in the real estate and insurance business in Belmond, from 1946 until his death. Then she assisted her son, Larry in the same business for over 30 years, serving as secretary, bookkeeper and licensed insurance sales representative. Alice was a widow for many years, but never seemed lonely as she had many good friends and enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Alice enjoyed bridge and 500 with her lady friends and special occasions with her children and grandchildren, playing Michigan Rummy. She was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the St. Francis Rosary Society.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sister, Lois; and brother, Lloyd. Alice is survived by her son, Larry (Nancy) Flanagan of Grimes; daughter, Mary Janice (DeWayne) Tobias of Benicia, California; son, Alan (Colleen) Flanagan of Cedar Rapids; and son, Robert (Janis) Flanagan of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, George (Lucille) Buterbaugh; and sister-in-law, Lina Buterbaugh.
