Norine Nyberg, age 98, of Yankton, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, with Rev. OK Anderson and Rev. David Wildermuth officiating. Eugene Brinkmeyer will be the organist. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Yankton Cemetery.
Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.Norine Cora Stokke Nyberg was born March 30, 1906, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Rasmus and Sarah (Dirdal) Stokke. She graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1924. Norine taught school with an elementary certificate in Eagle Grove. She then attended the University of Iowa graduating in 1930 with a degree in Elementary Education. She moved to Yankton in 1930 and taught at Beadle School for several years, eventually becoming principal there. She married Harold C. Nyberg in 1933 in Sioux Falls, SD. She continued to teach in the Yankton school system while raising their three children: James, David and Lynda. She has made the comment: "I taught everything except football." After retiring from full-time teaching, she spent many years substituting in Yankton elementary schools. Norine was active in Trinity Lutheran Church, PEO, Questers and a book club, as well as the Yankton Women's Club. She was instrumental in the founding of the original United Fund program in Yankton, served several years on the library board and immensely enjoyed golf and bridge. She often traveled with Harold when he worked for the Fantle Corporation and they enjoyed many trips to foreign countries. They spent several years wintering in Arizona before Harold's death in 1992.
Those who will cherish her memory are one son, James (Marilyn) of Yankton, SD; one daughter, Lynda (Tom) Angelis of Minneapolis, MN; a daughter-in-law, Mary Nyberg of Sioux City, IA; one niece, Patti (Al) Bahe; four grandchildren: Solveig (Bruce) Nyberg-Akert, Paul (Brenda) Nyberg, Kathy (Jesse) Fisher and John Nyberg; seven great-grandchildren: Kelda Norine Nelson, Erik Akert, Karena Nyberg, Alek Nyberg, Cloey Nyberg, Jackson Fisher and Gavin Fisher. She was preceded in death her parents; husband, Harold; son, David; one sister, Alice; and one nephew, Rodney Love. The family requests memorials be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church Organ Restoration Fund, 403 Broadway, Yankton, SD 57078.
