Dr. Harley Arnold Janson, 90, Clear Lake, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be in the Norway Township Cemetery near Belmond, Iowa. Visitation was Tuesday evening at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Dr. Harley Arnold Janson was born on Jan. 28, 1912, on a farm near Goldfield, Iowa, the fourth of 10 children, to Hjalmar and Anna (Enge) Janson. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage. He attended and received his elementary education at a rural country school near Goldfield, and graduated from Clarion High School in Clarion, Iowa. Harley also graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Veterinary medicine in 1938. He was united in marriage to Helen Henrickson on Sept. 12, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Nov. 17, 1990. After graduating from the University of Toronto, he moved to Thornton, Iowa, and practiced veterinary medicine until his retirement in 1966. After his retirement he continued his farming operations in the North Iowa area and moved to Clear Lake, shortly thereafter. He was united in marriage to Harriet Gorkowski on May 1, 1993, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He enjoyed working, farming, fishing, playing Bridge, cribbage, pinochle, traveling to Russia, Norway and throughout the continental United States. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and during his early years was very active in the community of Thornton.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Harriet Janson, of Clear Lake; three children, Barbara Janson and her husband, Arthur Hilsinger, of Boston, Mass., Kathleen Quinlan and her husband, David, of Jupiter, Fla., and Sharon Olson and her husband, Duane, of Tacoma, Wash., and Harrietıs daughter, Cheryl Millard, of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren, Mona Ellison and her husband, Donald, of Seattle, Wash., Ann Shallenberger of Boston, Mass., Remy, Victoria, and Carry Lee Gomez all of Tacoma, Wash., and Harrietıs two grandchildren, BJ and Mari Millard, both of St. Paul; a brother, Edgar Janson of Belmond; three sisters, Marjorie Holzbaur of San Diego, Calif., Evelyn Leffingwell of Alexandria, Va., and Anna Elaine Kane of Westgate, Iowa; as well as many other relatives and friends. Besides his first wife, Helen, he was also preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers, Tolford, Paul, who died in infancy, Kenneth, Eldon and Joel Janson.
