Thomas D. "Tom" Virkus, 53, of 849 Second St. N.W. in Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Memorials may be directed to the Thomas D. Virkus Memorial Fund.

Thomas Dean Virkus was born on Aug. 24, 1953, in Cokato, Minn., the son of August Virkus and Hilma Bristlin. He attended St. Francis School in St. Francis, Minn. Following school he attended chef school and then began working at North Iowa Medical Center as a supervisor. On May 14, 1980, he was united in marriage to Susan Hill in Sioux Falls, S.D. Shortly after marriage, he began driving truck for Silveys until going to work for Cornhusker Motor Lines in the late '80s, where he was employed until present. While working for Cornhusker, Tom received numerous awards one of which was receiving the Million Mile Award from Cornhusker Motor Lines. Tom enjoyed woodworking, fishing, joking around, spending time with his dog, Smokie, and especially spending time with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susan, of Mason City; three daughters, Melissa Burkhardt of Mason City, Bonnie (Roger) Williams of Mason City, and Kristin (Merle) Vosburgh of Mason City; one son, Jeremy (Kelly) Virkus, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; his mother, Hilma (Dale) Johnson, of Dassel, Minn.; his mother-in-law, Esther Hill, of Belmond; eight grandchildren, Dustin, Shaquille, Danae, Isaac, Jesse, Joey, Jacob and Ashley; one great-grandson, Isaiah, and a future great-grand-daughter; brothers and sisters, Candy, Steve, Bunny, Leonard, Alan, Charlie, Jim, Becky, Mary, Jake, Billy, John and Danny; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and his dog, Smokie. He is preceded in death by his father, August; brother, Pat; and father-in-law, Herbert Hill. Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.
