Harry S. Wenig, 100, died on Tuesday, November 12, 2002. Funeral services were held at the United Church of Christ in Belmond, on Friday, November 15, with Rev. Lynne Spencer Smith officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by Carol Severson, organist and Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Ushers were Louie Mennenga and George Hinman. Casket bearers were Rob Hill, Austin Hanson, Jeff Lamfers, Ashley Hanson, Michael Lamfers and Gene Lamfers.
Harry S. Wenig, was born on February 28, 1902, on his parents farm in rural Hancock, County near Klemme, the son of John J. and Emma (Schoper) Wenig. He attended country school in rural Klemme. He later began his life long career as a farmer. He loved the farm and received great satisfaction from working the land. He had farmed on the family farm until 1972 when he moved to Belmond. Harry was united in marriage to Phyllis Lamfers on February 11, 1972, at the Evangelical Free Church in Belmond. The couple made their home in Belmond. Harry continued to farm in Klemme while living in Belmond until 1978 when he retired. He enjoyed playing cards, especially 500. He was an avid reader. Harry and Phyllis enjoyed traveling, and he loved to visit friends and family. Everyone who knew him well, remember him as a very patient, deep thinking, quiet man. One of Harry's favorite sayings was, "There's only one path, uphill, not downhill." He had been a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center since September 2001.
Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Gareth "Gary" Lamfers; four sisters, Jessie Wenig, Hattie Wenig, Ada Wenig and Gladys Wenig; a brother, Oscar Wenig; and an infant brother, John Wenig. Survivors are his wife, Phyllis Wenig of Belmond; sons, Wayne (Petra) Lamfers of Belmond, Steven (Patty) Lamfers of Loveland, Colorado, David (Marie) Lamfers of New Orleans, Louisiana, Vern (Connie) Lamfers of Garner and James Lamfers and a special friend, Marlys Nuehring of Rowan; a daughter, Helen (David) Waters of Norwalk, California; daughter-in-law, Chris Lamfers of Wyoming, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren, Rondi, Rob, Ashley, Austin, Mike, Jeff, Jason, Jamie, Cory, Elizabeth, Melinda, Gene, Heather, Amanda, Richard and David, Jr.; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
