BRITT — Elizabeth M. Haxton, 88, of Britt, passed away Saturday (April 18, 1998) at her daughter’s home in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Britt. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel with a 7:30 p.m. parish wake service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.
Elizabeth, the daughter of John and Katherine Kress Appelhons, was born March 25, 1910, in Rothomel, Russia. On Oct. 7, 1912, she came to America where the family settled near Waverly, Iowa. For a short time, the family lived in Minnesota. Later, they located in Britt. She was united in marriage with Martin Lichman at St. Patrick’s Church in Britt on Sept. 27, 1927. The couple moved to Chicago where John was born. Following the death of Martin, she and her son returned to Britt. She was united in marriage with Henry Merle Haxton on Dec. 10, 1934, at Eagle Grove, Iowa. The couple made their home in Britt. For the past seven years, Elizabeth had made her home with her daughter, Kathy, in Mason City. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Britt American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to fish, garden and quilt.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy and her husband, Tom Barlas, of Mason City; a son, John and wife, Wavel Lichman, of Britt; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene and husband, Darrell Francis, of Britt; two brothers, John and wife, Emma Appelhons, of Thompson; Joe and wife, Donna Appelhons, of Britt; sister-in-law, Tena Appelhons, of Crystal Lake; and a brother-in-law, Lewis Fox, of Britt. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin, in 1929; husband, Merle, in 1980; a daughter, Mary Haxton, in 1994; two sisters, Mary Fox and Barbara Jilek; and a brother, Jake Appelhons.
