Richard J. Hurd, 82, of Marshalltown died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Veterans Medical Center in Iowa City. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown, with burial at Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery there. Mr. Hurd was born in Alden and had lived in Hampton before moving to Dows many years ago. He moved to Marshalltown in 2000. He was a farmer and a carpenter befor retiring. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Dows. He enjoyed repairing items and playing cards and the harmonica.

He is survived by a son, Murvil of Eagan, Minn. two daughters, Darla Brooks of Bella Vista, Ark., and LeAnn Tjarks of Goldfield a brother, Max of Council Bluffs a sister, Geraldine Blankenship of Hampton six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Marshalltown, where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard J. Hurd Memorial Fund.

Richard J. Hurd, age 82, of the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Dows, Iowa, died Monday, August 20, 2002 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 23, 2002, 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr.Rich King, First Presbyterian Church, officiating. A visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Interment will follow services at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa, with the V.F.W., Harry C. Harter Post No. 839, providing full military honors. Memorials may be directed to the Richard J. Hurd Memorial Fund.

Richard Jay was born January 27, 1920, in Alden, Iowa the son of Stanton F. & Irene L. (Bryan) Hurd. Richard grew up in the Hardin County area where he attended school.He was married to Myrna Marie McDonald, November 24, 1939 in Lancaster, Missouri. He moved to Hampton for about a year before moving to Dows, where he farmed until about 1959. He moved into Dows and started working as a carpenter, where he enjoyed fixing and repairing all types of items. He served his country during WWII from June 1944 to January 1946 in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed collecting owls, playing the harmonica, playing cards, and dancing. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dows.

He is survived by a son: Murvil & wife Connie Hurd, Eagan, Minnesota, two daughters: Darla & husband Willis Brooks, Bella Vista, Arkansas and Leann & husband David Tjarks, Goldfield, Iowa, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a brother: Max & wife Gerry Hurd, Council Bluffs, Iowa and a sister: Geraldine Blankenship, Hampton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Myrna (July 26, 2002), a daughter: Janet Jansen, two granchildren: Jeff & Jessica Jansen, a brother: Donald and a sister: Marie Newberry.
