Funeral services for Dr. Gerald C. Sunner, 77, of Milford, who died Friday, January 5, 2007, at his home will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church in Milford. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at the Turner Funeral Home in Milford with the family present at the funeral from 4 to 6 p.m. tonight.

Gerald C. Sunner was born March 23, 1929 at Eagle Grove, Iowa to Carl and Helen Sunner. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1947 and then enlisted in the Army, 101st Airborne with his twin brother, Gordon. In January 1951, he attended Wartburg College, then the University of Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1957 and then did his internship at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He moved to Fort Dodge in 1960. In 1952, he married Shirley Derscheid, and three children, Debra, John and Brian were born to this union. In 1974, he moved to Lake Okoboji and practiced in Spencer and Milford. He and Shirley lived and practiced in California from 1985 to 1990. He semi-retired in 2002 to enjoy farming, real estate development and professional football.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Milford, Iowa; daughter, DD Sunner, of Iowa City, Iowa; sons, John Sunner, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Brian Sunner, of Okoboji, Iowa; and grandson Adam Sunner, of Spirit Lake, Iowa. Survivors also include two brothers, Dr. Kurt and Betty Sunner, of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Dr. Paul Sunner, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one sister, Helen Chapman, of Los Vegas, Nevada; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Sunner, of Clear Lake, Iowa and Barbara Sunner Hull, of Humboldt, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Helen Sunner, older brother Harold and twin brother, Gordon.
