Sanford "Sammy" G. Severson, 91, died on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church near Belmond, Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating with interment in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by organist, Carol Severson and the St. Olaf Men's Choir accompanied by Ellie Nelson. Ushers were Clifford Toft and Alfred Johnson. Casket bearers were Scott Severson, David Christenson, Sid Severson, Herb B. Brand, John Haugen and Elon Dahley.

Sanford Severson was born in Humboldt County on January 9, 1913, the son of Knut and Alma (Gunderson) Severson. He was baptized in the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. When he was six years old he moved with his parents to the Belmond/Clarion area and attended the Belmond Rural School No. 9. He was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran and was a life time member there. On December 31, 1935, he married Lillian Haugen at Northwood. They farmed in the Belmond/Clarion area until their retirement in 1976 when they moved into Belmond. Sanford was a director of Belmond No. 9 School and had served as a deacon and trustee of St. Olaf. He had been involved with the Luther League, served as an usher at church and filled various other roles. He served on the Belmond Community Apartments Board and was instrumental in organizing the Over 60 Club. He was a Care Car Driver, delivered Meals on Wheels, and served on the Belmond Creamery Board. Sanford and Lillian enjoyed card parties and dancing at the Surf Ballroom in earlier years. Sammy was a devoted care giver to his wife during her failing health. He looked forward to a competitive game of cards with grandson, Scott and coffeeing with his friends. He loved the farm and helped his son up to the time of his illness.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife in 2003; and sisters, Myrtle, Leila and Betty. Survivors are his son, Larry (Carol) Severson of Belmond; grandson, Scott Severson and his fiancée, Missy Jeffers of Belmond; sisters, Kathryn Christenson of Belmond and Elaine Lenz of Mason City; and brother, Kenneth P. Severson of Clarion.
