Ida Koenen, was born on December 22, 1909, on the family farm near Alexander, the daughter of Harm and Hermina (Dirks) Koenen. She attended Alexander Schools. Then she assisted her father on the farm. She married Ben Smit on May 10, 1933. They farmed east of Meservey where they raised seven children. Ida was a life long homemaker and partner in the farm. She was hard working and always put the needs of her family and others before her own. She will be remembered for her wonderful homemade breads and rolls. Each family member has handcrafted gifts such as tablecloths, doilies and afghans. People remember sledding parties in the winter and going to Ida's home for homemade goodies, hot cocoa and oyster stew, followed by sing-alongs. Ida enjoyed reading and was an avid gardener, which she continued well into her late 80's. She and Ben visited Germany. They also enjoyed fishing trips to the north country.
