Thora Trees, 99, died on Thursday, May 13, 2004. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 15, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. Organist was Lyn Courson and soloist was Sue Nelson. Casket bearers were Al Charlson, Joe McLaughlin, Al Rodriguez, Al Mattison, Jim Chelesvig and Vern Gordon.

Thora Carpenter was born on February 16, 1905 north of Goodell, the daughter of Alfred C. and Lydia J. (Smith) Carpenter. She attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from the Goodell High School in 1923. She returned home to the farm for a short period of time. On August 26, 1924, she married James F. Trees at the Belmond Methodist Church. Thora was a life long homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for nearly 75 years and had been active in the UMW, Rebecca and Goodwill Circles and the Belmond Senior Citizens. Thora and Jim spent many winters in Florida. After Jim's death in 1983, she moved to the Belmond Community Apartments where she lived for 18 years. She became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in June 2001.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; brothers, Harry, Lloyd and Alfred and their wives; sister, Thelma Schlichting and her husband; and daughters-in-law, Beverly and Jane. Survivors are her daughter, Cleo (Richard) Frank of Gig Harbor, Washington; son, Bill Trees of Wauna, Washington; brother, Richard (Carole) Carpenter of Shelter Cove, California; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
