Fern Lorene Tomson, 85, of Belmond, died on Friday, March 19, 2004, at Buena Vista Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 26, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Eldoris Bunnell was organist and Marilyn Janssen was soloist. Casket bearers were Gary Berkland, Steve Been, Rod Been, Rod Tomson, Chuck Tomson, Zack Vosburg and Brian Worden. Honorary bearers were Merle Been, Soupy Cramer, Dale Hauge, Gus Halverson and Ralph Turner.
Fern, the daughter of Henry and Ida Anderson White, was born on November 2, 1918, near Carpenter in Worth County. She graduated from the Northwood High School in 1936 and attended Hamilton School of Business in Mason City. She moved to Belmond in 1938 and was employed as a secretary for Hogenson Construction. Fern married Robert J. Tomson at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett on December 14, 1941. Fern lived in Webster City and Kensett while Robert was in the Navy. Following his discharge the couple moved back to Belmond where they opened Tomson Grocery across from the school. Fern was later employed by attorney Roy Henderson for ten years, and then self-employed as an insurance agent and real estate broker at the Tomson Insurance Agency. Fern volunteered for various projects including, Belmond Community School Board, Belmond Park Commission, Belmond Planning and Zoning Commission, Belmond Community Care Car, VFW Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Congregate Meals, Rebekah Lodge and Belmond Senior Citizens. Fern was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was involved with ALCW, Pearl Circle, and the church council.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Leslie V. White and J. Richard White. Fern is survived by her daughters, Lynnette (Jonathan) Hruska of Storm Lake and Linda Geery of Knoxville; grandchildren, Nathan (Julie) Hruska, Jennifer Hruska, Kristin Hruska, Cara Geery and Cami (John) Hollinrake; great-grandsons, Dominick Clarke, Joseph Hollinrake, Cael Hollinrake and Ethan Hruska; and great-granddaughter, Sydney Hruska.
