Harvey PALS

Harvey Pals, 82, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at the Hampton Health Care Center. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 3, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial was in the Meservey Cemetery.

Harvey, was born on February 18, 1921, on the family farm in Franklin County, the son of Hilko and Tillie (Blau) Pals. He attended country school through the 7th grade, after which he farmed and worked odd jobs in the area. In 1940, he married his first wife, Maxine Swenson. They had one daughter, Iva Jeanne. Harvey joined the Army in 1941 and was soon discharged due to health complications. Once out of the Army, he farmed in the Wright and Franklin County areas until his divorce from Maxine in 1965. Harvey continued to farm in the area until he married Fonda Martin in 1967. He was employed by the Wright County Conservation until he retired in 1983. Harvey loved going to auctions, finding great antiques, and talking to people about the treasures they may have in their homes. He was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey. When his health began to fail, he was placed in the Belmond hospital, Sheffield Care Center and finally in the Alzheimer's Unit at the Hampton Health Care Center, where he had been for the last four years.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; three sisters; and an infant daughter.
Survivors include his wife, Fonda of Belmond; daughter, Iva Jeanne (Erwin) Hill of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Dennis (Chrissy) Hill of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, Kenneth (Michelle) Hill of Cedar Rapids and Rodney (Teri) Hill of Denver, Colorado; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Viola Barkema of Belmond and Iona Yost of Las Vegas, Nevada; and brothers, Leslie Pals of Mason City and Louie Pals of Marshalltown.
