Clair C. Hill, 94, of Dows, died on Saturday, December 13, 2003, at the Franklin General Nursing facility in Hampton. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 19, at 10:30 a.m., at the Dows United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery west of Rowan. Visitation was held from 4-6:00 p.m., on Thursday at the Dows Community Funeral Home. Music was provided by Marillyn Korth, organist and Anna Mae Avery, soloist. Ushers were Edwin Dow and Bob Hess. Casket bearers were John Snyder, Maynard Meyer, Alan Buseman, Dave Oelmann, John Coombs and John Dickerson. Honorary bearers were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Clair, the son of Clarence and Mildred (Bates) Hill, was born on October 24, 1909, on the family farm five miles northwest of Dows. On March 25, 1936, he married Fern L. Carr of Alexander at the Methodist Parsonage in Rowan. He was a member of the Rowan Methodist Church, where he served many years in various positions. After moving to Dows in 1974, he transferred his membership to the Dows United Methodist Church. Clair enjoyed his farm life. He was proud of all aspects of farming, including the grains he raised and his livestock. Up through the fall of 2002, at the age of 93, he still did most of the spring and fall tilling.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Lawrence, Laurel and Aubrey; sisters, Edith Fitz, Veva White and Mildred Pepper; daughter-in-law, Delores Hill; and great-granddaughter, McKenzie Gerlach. Survivors include his children, Cecil (Mary) Hill of Clear Lake, Darwin (Marilyn) Hill of Latimer, Leola Erickson of Lincoln, Nebraska and Marilyn (Gary) Carlson of Spencer; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, LaVonne Morris of Albert Lea and Evelyn Boyington of State Center; and brother, Arthur of Iowa Falls.
