Herbert Anton Hill, 89, died on Thursday, September 25, 2003. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 29, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Rev. Rod Hopp and Rev. Lowell H. Halverson officiating. Interment was in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist and Marilyn Janssen, soloist. Ushers were Al Charlson and Loren Bamford. Casket bearers were Harold Hill, Clifford Olson, Paul Rokke, Harold Buseman, Tom Hill, Bob Hill and Larry Severson.
Herbert Anton Hill, the son of John and Christian (Hillestad) was born on January 16, 1914, near Belmond. He was baptized on April 8, 1914 and confirmed in 1930, both at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Belmond. Herb farmed his family's farm west of Belmond. He was united in marriage to Esther May Steenblock on March 1, 1942, by Rev. O. M. Severseike, then pastor of the St. Olaf-Trinity Parish. In 1950, they moved to a farm one mile west of Belmond where they continued farming together until 1978, when they retired and moved into town. They were members of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where Herbert was an active member, serving as Deacon for a number of years and ushered. He was known as the "fix it" guy by his family and other relatives. He enjoyed wood-working, such as toys for children, one of which was a rocking horse for their daughter. It is still in use by the great-grandchildren. He also made wooden clocks for family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Josie in infancy, Carrie and Annie; brothers, Joseph, Henry and Chester; and nephew, Jerry Lewis. Survivors are his wife, Esther; his daughter, Susan (Thomas) Virkus of Mason City; three granddaughters, and their families, Mellisa Burkhardt and son, Dustin of Mason City, Bonnie Cahill and children, Shaquille, Danae, and Isaac of Muncie, Indiana, Kristin, (Merle) Vosburgh and children, Jesse, Joseph, and Jacob of Mason City; sister-in-law, Adelaide Hill of Belmond; brother-in-law, Peter Steenblock of Bishop, California; and several nieces and nephews.
