Lirlene Ione Bamford, 85, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 28, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Music was provided by Carol Severson. Ushers were Al Charlson and Glenn Meints. Casket bearers were Jeffrey Crawford, Matthew Crawford, Marc Crawford, Scott Heilmann, Jonathan Heilmann, Ann Crawford, Katherine Heilmann, Leslie Bamford, Inga Bamford and Siobhan Bamford.

Lirlene was born near Jewell on May 29, 1918, to Norwegian immigrant parents Ivar and Ingeborg (Hanson) Oppedal. The family moved to a farm near Alexander and after Ingeborg's death in 1924, took up residence near Belmond. On March 21, 1942, she married Loren A. Bamford. They farmed and raised their family north of Belmond, residing there until moving into town in 1999. Lirlene was a graduate of the Belmond High School and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved her Iowa farm roots and took great pride in her Norwegian heritage, making three visits to Norway during her lifetime.

Lirlene was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Janice Crawford of Belmond and Merry (Steve) Heilmann of Afton, Minnesota; son, Paul of Chelsea, Michigan; her Brazilian "son" Paulo (Maria) Canineu and family; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Michelle) Crawford, Marc (Carolyn) Crawford, Matthew (Brandy) Crawford, Ann Crawford and her friend Jason Campbell, Jonathan Heilmann and fiancée, Kim Cote, Scott and Katherine Heilmann, Leslie, Inga and Siobhan Bamford; and great-granddaughters, Madison and Abbigail Crawford.
