Kenneth L. VerHelst, 75, of Belmond, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church, with interment in the Belmond Cemetery. Kenneth Leroy, was born on December 12, 1927 at Mason City, to Mell and Iva Mae (Hill) VerHelst. He graduated from the Swaledale High School. In 1949 he married Maurine Barkema. The couple farmed near Meservey and later in the Kanawha area for 30 years, retiring and moving to Belmond in 1996.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and six brothers. He is survived by his wife; children, Sheryl (Ron) Ungerer of Xenia, Ohio, Lynn (Verlyn) Andrews of Alexander and Craig (Judy) VerHelst of Colorado Springs.
