Leo M. Kearney, died on Tuesday, February 18, 2003. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 21, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiated. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery. Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist and Cyndy McNulty, cantor. Mary Ann Spitler served as lector, Eucharistic Ministers were Sharon Johnson and Mona McLaughlin. Altar Servers were Michael Just and Kelsey Mallen. Ushers were Art Lamoureux and Art Benetti. Casket bearers were Virgil Stahl, Devin Piippo, Kay Burke, Brian Tisor, Wayne Redmond and Jeff Tisor. Honorary bearers were Gerald McNulty, Kristen Tisor, Laurel Redmond, Gerald Burke, Rebecca Peterson, Sandra Piippo and Amy Tisor.
Leo, the son of Michael and Alice Hemingway Kearney, was born on September 5, 1917, on his parents farm at Klemme. He lived on the farm his entire life. Leo graduated from the Goodell High School, where he was the valedictorian of his class. Leo married Irene (Angelides) Tisor, on September 12, 1964 and they farmed the home place. Irene died on July 28, 1995. Leo continued to reside on the farm until moving to the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City in January of this year. Leo was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He had a life-long love of working the land and was known by many for his love of gardening and exceptional tomatoes. He loved visiting with people, caring for his special dogs and cats, and truly enjoyed family celebrations such as birthday parties and Christmas gatherings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene; and sisters, Frances and LaVonne. Survivors include his daughter, Sharon (Richard) Peterson of Mason City; sons, Larry Tisor and his companion, Becky Sundermeyer of Mason City, Jon (Karen) Tisor of Thornton and Tom (Luci) Tisor of Mason City; grandchildren, Rebecca Peterson, Laurel Redmond, Sandra Piippo, Kristen Tisor, Brian Tisor, Jeffrey Tisor and Amy Tisor; six great-grandchildren; nephew, Byron Gregerson; nieces, Adrianne Klehr and Karen Haag; and special cousins, Emmett and Lou Kearney and Winnifred Clausen.
