George Mennenga, 93, of Belmond, died Thursday Aug. 20, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at the Immanuel Reformed Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

George Mennenga was born on Feb. 6, 1905, on the family farm, in rural Belmond, the son of Heiko and Minnie (Boelman) Mennenga. George was baptized at the Immanuel Reformed Church, east of Belmond. He graduated from the country school, Pleasant Township, District No. 4, and attended Hamilton Business College, in Mason City, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Alma Dorenkamp on Feb. 11, 1931. They moved into their farm home where they lived for 39 years, until he retired, and moved to Belmond. He was a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church and served many years as an elder. George served 15 years as a township committee man for A.S.C.; eight years as director of Pleasant Township District No. 4; and two years as a grounds keeper for the Belmond Country Club. He was a member of the Senior Citizens in Belmond. George enjoyed cribbage, which he played until his final month, bowling, horseshoes (County Singles Champion in 1968), and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Alma, of Belmond, Iowa; daughter, Marilyn Cance and her husband, Don, of Wellington, Fla.; sons, Curtis and his wife, Kaye, of Ankeny, Iowa; and Craig and his wife, Carol, of Osage, Iowa; grandchildren, Tracy Mennenga, of Albert Lea, Minn.; Jennifer Mennenga, of Mason City, Iowa; Brian Mennenga, a member of the U.S. Air Force; great-grandson, Dylan Mennenga, of Albert Lea, Minn.; sister, Janet Boelman and her husband, Jelto, of Belmond, Iowa; brother, Edwin, of Belmond, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Minnie of Belmond, Iowa; Marvieu, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Esther Bohning, of Belmond, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a stillborn child; sisters, Magdalene Braner, Grace Pals and Rena Pals; and brothers, Alfred, Henry, and Carl.
