Alma Dorenkamp was born on Sept. 29, 1910, near Meservey in Wright County, the daughter of Bene and Emma (Stadtlander) Dorenkamp. She attended Meservey Schools. Alma made her confession of faith at the Immanuel Reformed Church. In earlier years of her life, she had done housekeeping and cooking for various families in the area. She was united in marriage to George Mennenga at the Immanuel Reformed parsonage, rural Belmond, on Feb. 11, 1931. They lived and farmed northeast of Belmond until 1970, when they retired and moved into Belmond. They moved into the Belmond Retirement Home in 1989. Alma was a member R.C.W. She taught Sunday school and catechism for a number of years. Alma was a member of the Senior Citizens in Belmond for many years. She enjoyed reading, sewing and playing cards. She was an excellent seamstress and did a lot of alterations until failing health forced her to discontinue this activity. Alma and George had enjoyed traveling to visit their children, Sunday afternoon drives to visit friends, and hosting dinners for her family and friends. She was an excellent cook and will be remembered by her grandchildren for making homemade cookies and caramel corn. Her other specialties were making apple and lemon pies from scratch. Alma was a very hard-working person who always put the needs of others before her own.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her son, Curtis Mennenga and his wife, Kaye, of Ankeny; daughter, Marilyn Cance and husband, Don, of Vero Beach, Calif., and son, Craig Mennenga and wife, Carol, of Osage; one sister, Esther Bohning, of Belmond; sister-in-law, Alida Dorenkamp, of Belmond; sisters-in-law Minnie Mennenga of Belmond and Janet Boelman and husband, Jelto, of Belmond; three grandchildren, Tracy Mennenga, of Mason City, Jennifer Mennenga and special friend, Eric Douglas, of Mason City, and Brian Mennenga, of Spokane, Wash.; one great-grandson, Dylan Mennenga, of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.
