Charles "Chuck" F. Cole, 63, Belmond, died April 22, 2006 at his home surrounded by his family. Services will be held Wednesday, April 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. Full military honors will be provided at the Belmond Cemetery. Chuck was born June 1, 1942 in Minneapolis and graduated there before entering the U.S. Air Force. During his two tours in Vietnam he became a POW for a short time. Upon returning to the United States he married Betty Lauden of Belmond in December 1966. Some of Chuck's favorite activities were camping, fishing and square dancing in Tennessee, eating shellfish in Virginia, and sightseeing and swapping customs in Hokkaido, Japan. Greenland had its treasures of glaciers and cold climate. After 22 years of service in the Air Force he retired to Sacramento, CA. Wherever he lived, he had one or two little ones he spoiled. In 1990 the family returned to Belmond when his mother-in-law entered the nursing home. They purchased the motel from Edith Hill (renaming it C&G) and then opened CBJ's Auto Wash. They bought a home on Lake Cornelia where Chuck enjoyed fishing on his pontoon boat. He loved to watch wildlife and play cards during the winter months and to spend time with his two grandsons. After their health started to decline, the Coles moved back to Belmond.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Frances (Nichols) Cole; brothers Joe, Ralph, Myron (Bud), and James; sisters Ida Mitchell and Irene Shores; brother-in-law George Gerdes; two nephews; and a niece. Chuck is survived by his wife; daughter Tammy (Mitch) Gladue of Clarion; son John (Lisa) of Belmond; and son James of Belmond; grandsons Adam Gladue and Tyler Baldwin; brother Daniel Cole of Forest Lake, MN; sisters-in-law Vallie Cole of Fayetteville, AR, Frances Cole of Minneapolis, Rosie Gardes of Klemme, and Wilma (Marvin) Lindsay of Swaledale.
