Ernest E. Pickering, 86, Sioux City, died December 15, 2006 at his home. Services were held December 19 at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery. Graveside services were performed by the Belmond Military Guard.

Ernest, son of Walter and Josephine (Ciner) Pickering, was born July 14, 1920 in Manly. He graduated from high school in Mason City. On September 3, 1941 he married Edna Dettman of Belmond in Cedar Rapids. Ernest served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Okinawa and played in the U.S. Army Band. He worked as plant manager at F.W. Means Laundry for 23 years and as a housing inspector for the City of Sioux City for seven years. Ernest loved fishing, listening to and playing music, his home and yard work. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Ernest was a member of First United Methodist Church, Landmark Lodge #103, Consistory, and the Abu Bekr Brass Band.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Ernest is survived by his wife; son Jerry (Susan) Pickering of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; cousin Shirley Koci of Manly; and several relatives in Belmond.
