Earl Vernie Hofsommer, 86, of Dows, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2006, at the Hampton Health Care Center. A funeral service was held on Thursday, December 14, at the Morgan United Methodist Church, Dows. Pastor David Gobeli officiated at the 11:00 a.m. service. Burial was held in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows.

Earl Vernie Hofsommer, was born on January 27, 1920 near Dows, the son of Charles and Gladys (Carpenter) Hofsommer. Earl attended country school near Dows, later moving to Rowan where he attended school there. On September 8, 1940, Earl was united in marriage to June Holmes. Earl worked as a mechanic for two years and began farming in 1942. Earl also raised hogs and cattle for many years. He had his own seed business for 41 years. Earl loved machinery, his shop, and creating and inventing tools. He built many things, including the last project which was a backhoe for his skid loader. He also built an electric ferris wheel for his great-grandchildren, who loved riding on it. Earl experimented with raising emu for a short time. Earl and June celebrated many wedding anniversaries in Branson, Missouri. Earl was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees, a member of the Dows Lions Club, and Soil Commissioner for several years. He loved bowling, basketball, watching his great-grandchildren play sports, and listening to them sing and play music.

Earl is survived by his wife, June; one son, Dean Hofsommer and wife, Sandra of Story City; one daughter, Mary Moody and husband, Bob of Battle Ground, Washington; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Dubois of Memence, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Evelyn; and three brothers, Walter, Roy and Dale.
