Eva “Miriam” Mathews, age 90, of Colfax, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 9, 2006. Visitation will be at the Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax on Friday, August 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax on Saturday, August 12 at 2:00 p.m. Burial service will follow at McKeever Cemetery north of Colfax.
Miriam was born on August 22, 1915 on the family farm, north of Guernsey, Iowa. She attended the Lincoln #3 Rural School near her home and graduated from Guernsey High School. She then attended Iowa State Teacher’s College and William Penn University. Miriam taught high school home economics and English in Woolstock, Riverside and Williams, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Lyle E. Mathews in May of 1950 and then became a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. In 1975, Miriam moved to Colfax onto her grandparents’ farm. Here she enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, baking, and spending time with family. She was also fond of traveling and site seeing. Miriam spent her later years spoiling her granddaughters. She took great joy in their accomplishments and was very proud to attend their high school graduations.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Leland Mathews of Des Moines, daughter, Kathy A. Mathews of Colfax, granddaughters Elizabeth Mathews and Susan Mathews, both of Colfax. Miriam was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle E. Mathews, sister, Sarah “Mabel” Coats, brother, Vernon Roy Coats, parents, Charles H. and Clara C. Coats, and numerous friends and family members.
