BELMOND - Marian Irene (State) Arends died of congestive heart failure on Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at the Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. A funeral service for Marian I. Arends will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Rowan in Rowan with the Rev. JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will take place in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan. Casket bearers will be her grandsons, Forrest, Todd, and Lance Aldrich, Robert and David Zangel, and Jason, Casey, and Justin Arends. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Marian was born near Galt, Iowa, on Aug. 21, 1919, the daughter of Charles Archie and Verna (Winslow) State. She attended Lincoln # 6 country school until 8th grade. Her first two years of high school were at Galt, and the last two years were at Iowa Falls, where she graduated in 1936. Two years later she was united in marriage to John Henry Arends at the Little Brown Church on April 20, 1938. They moved to a farm south of Belmond in 1949. After her husband's death in 1998 she continued to live on the home place, because it was her favorite place to be. Writing prose and poetry gave her great joy, and she has left a treasured legacy of family history, as well as various other essays that reflect her humor and insight. She enjoyed the beauties of nature, especially watching all the birds that would gather around the feeders outside her picture window. She will be remembered for her gentle, sweet spirit, her patience, her acceptance of what life held for her, and her love of her family. Marian was a member of the United Church of Rowan.

She is survived by her five children and their spouses. They are: Gloria and Bob Zangel of Las Vegas, Nev., Lynne and Lee Aldrich of Belmond, John and Judy Arends of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dale and Trese Arends of Belmond, and Alison and Sherman McNeal of Cedar Falls. In addition to her five children, she is survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Sharon Wilkinson, Robert and David Zangel, Forrest, Todd, and Lance Aldrich, Heather Kunce, Gretchen Bouknight, Tiffany Arends, Jason, Casey, and Justin Arends, and Grace and Lucia McNeal. Her eleven great-grandchildren are Jessica, April, Katrina, and Tyler Wilkinson, Kaitlyn, Caroline, and Marianne Aldrich, Ryan Aldrich, Haley Kunce, Sierra Bouknight, and Vanessa Arends; two sisters, Marvel Box of Rowan and Berniece Andrews and husband, Ryle, of Belmond; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry, and an infant granddaughter, Lorelei Aldrich. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.
