George Best, 72, formerly of Salida, Colorado was born in Wright County, Iowa on Nov. 15, 1927. He was a resident of Colorado since 1975 and passed away Jan. 30, 2000, at his home in Panama City, Fla. George and his family moved to San Isabel Scout Ranch and built their home and lived for 13 years. George worked as the camp ranger and camp director, touching the lives of thousands of Scouts and Scouters from all over the United States. George was a firm believer that Scouting was the best youth program in the world. He spent over 50 years devoting his time and efforts to the program. George was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor, the District Award of Merit and numerous other Scouting awards. George was a very loving husband, father and grandfather, always offering support for all of the family. George will be greatly missed. In Salida, George and Corinne managed the Ranch House Motel and then the Mariposa and Plaza Apartments. George served on the Boy Scout Troop 60 Committee, the Salida Recreation Inc. board and on the Boy Scout District Committee. George loved camping, hunting and reading. George and his wife Corinne moved to Panama City, Fla., in August 1996.

George is survived by his wife, Corinne, Panama City, Fla.; daughters, Tracy (Dave) Calloway, Oveida, Fla., and Cassandra (Ron) Spiegleman, Panama City; sons, Michael (Susie) Best, Littleton, and Steve (Tonie) Best, Salida. George is also survived by his grandchildren, Eric Best, Denver, Ty Best, Salida, Jared Best, Greeley, Leya, Daniel and Hannah Spiegleman, Panama City, Fla., and Kadi, Michelle and Jacob Calloway, Oveida, Fla. Mike and Susie Best are expecting their firstborn in February. It was George's wish to be cremated and his ashes scattered in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Rocky Mountain Council, Box 3292, Pueblo, Colo., 81005. Cards for Corinne can be sent to 1538-A Doty Circle, Panama City, Fla., 32404. A celebration of his life will be held at San Isabel at a later date to be announced. Family memorial services will be held in Panama City, Fla., and Littleton.
