MARY RUTH HOLROYD - Church Volunteer
Mary Ruth Holroyd, 69, a homemaker and member of St. Luke Catholic Church in McLean, died July 30 at her home in McLean, Virginia. She had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Mrs. Holroyd, who lived in the Washington area since the late 1940s, was born in Clarion, Iowa, and attended St. Mary's College in South Bend, Ind. She was active in a number of volunteer groups, including religious education programs at St. Luke Church, Marymount University's Mother Butler Guild and the Catholic Charities Ball for the Diocese of Arlington. She was a member of the Georgetown University Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary Board, the Arlington Hospital Volunteers and the Women's Civic Association in Bethany Beach, Del., where she had a summer home.

Her husband, L.J. "Dick" Holroyd, died in 1992. Survivors include four children, the Rev. Patrick Holroyd of Reston, Mary Beth Nagareda of Gilroy, Calif., Dr. Timothy J. Holroyd of Virginia Beach and Martha Goetzman of Annandale; three sisters, Eileen Wolf of Raeford, N.C., Judy Hester of Texas and Polly Kawarsky of Kansas; two brothers, Harry Dunn of Locust Grove, Va., and Thomas "Tim" Dunn of Florida; and eight grandchildren.
