Arthur M. Barnes, a respected journalism professor who directed graduate studies for 19 years at the University of Iowa's School of Mass Communication, died Friday in his home in Melbourne, Fla. He was 87. He died of emphysema, said his son, Keith Barnes. Born in Eagle Grove, Barnes began his journalism career at the weekly Eagle Grove Eagle, which was owned by his father. In 1935, he earned a bachelor's in history and a master's in speech at Iowa, where he also worked for the Daily Iowan. Barnes completed an internship with the Associated Press radio in New York and earned his doctorate in public speaking and rhetoric from Cornell. Barnes was editor of the bulletin of the National Association of Radio News Editors in the late 1940s. He was named head of Iowa's journalism graduate studies in 1950 and elected to the school's Hall of Fame in 1964. He retired in 1979. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Brownlie and Maxwell Funeral Home, Melbourne, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur M. Barnes, 87, former director of the School of Journalism at Penn State. Friday at his home in Melbourne, Fla., of emphysema. Born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Iowa and a doctorate at Cornell University. He taught public speaking at Cornell, Dartmouth College, New York University and at Princeton, where he also served as coach of the debate team. In 1945, after an internship with Associated Press radio in New York, he returned to the University of Iowa to help develop one of the nation's first graduate programs in mass communications.
