Barbara D. Whitman, 89, of Lexington, Illinois died at 3:35 a.m. Monday (May 22, 2006) at ManorCare Health Service, Normal. A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of Christ, Uniting, Disciples of Christ, in Lexington with the Rev. Jan Proeber officiating. Burial will follow at Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Calvert & Musselman Funeral Home, Lexington, with Order of the Eastern Star services at 7 p.m., conducted by Ionic Thompson Chapter 147 of El Paso. Memorials may be made to her church, Lexington Peace Meals or to the Ionic Thompson Chapter 147 Order of the Eastern Star.

She was born July 4, 1916, in Dows, Iowa, the daughter of Byron D. and Perle Hoffman Bangs. She married Royal "Toby" Whitman on Sept. 4, 1938, in Unionville, Mo. He died April 2, 1982. Surviving are three daughters, Barbara (Doug) Freed and Linda (John) Brown, both of Lexington; and Janice (Robert) Michael, Towanda; seven grandchildren, Doug Freed II, Dawn Wasson, Rob Sherman, Julie Clark, John, Michael and Bill Brown. She had 13 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Barbara was a member of the Church of Christ, Uniting, Disciples of Christ Church in Lexington and the Ionic Thompson Chapter 147 Order of the Eastern Star, El Paso, where she was a 50-year member and a past matron. She and her husband had operated Toby's Mesa Café in Lexington. She also worked as a dispatcher for the Lexington Emergency Services. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed by all.
