John J. Williams, 96, of General Longstreet Drive, died Nov. 17, 1996 in a hospital. Mr. Williams was born in Dows, Iowa, and was a 70-year resident of Virginia. He retired as a Navy Reserve captain after 25 years and had been superintendent of civilian personnel, O & R Department at NAS, Norfolk. He had been retired for 27 years. A graduate of the University of Virginia with B.S. and M.A. degrees, Capt. Williams had been a commanding officer of Selective Services Division 5-1, the first division of its kind established by the Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Irma H. Williams; two daughters, Marjorie H. Cave and Mary J. Piche, both of Virginia Beach; a brother, Henry Williams of Boscobel, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A private family burial will be held.
