Irene Schleusner Schmidt, 83, died June 22, 2002 at the home of her daughter, Dianna Erdman in Belmond. Funeral services were held Monday, June 24, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with Fr. David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Cantors were Rose Speth and Cyndy McNulty; lector, Donna Kopriva; organist, Maxine Whitty; Eucharistic Ministers were Regina Lamoureux, Mary Ann Spitler, Pat Schmit, Linda Kehrt; ushers were Gerald McNulty and Terry Anderson; casket bearers, Kim Ingwersen, Jenny King, Scott Tenold, Lisa Conner, Lisa Schleusner, Jeff Erdman, Karla Fischer, Trisha Schleusner, Steve Tenold, Julie Schleusner, Kristi Funk, and Todd Schleusner. Burial was at St. Boniface Cemetery near Garner.

Irene Margaret Spangler, the daughter of John and Lena (Miller) Spangler was born October 17, 1918, on a farm near Garner in Hancock County. She attended Garner High School and Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She was united in marriage to Paul A. Schleusner on April 2, 1940, at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City. She worked at several retail businesses in Forest City, as well as Winnebago Industries. After Paul's death in 1973, she continued to live in Forest City and was united in marriage to Joe Schmidt on October 13, 1979. They lived in Forest City and Port Charlotte, Florida. Joe died on July 15, 1983 and shortly thereafter Irene moved to Belmond. She enjoyed her many bus trips, bingo on Thursday and was a very faithful member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands, Paul Scheusner and Joe Schmidt; great-grandson, Wesley Ingwersen; sister, Bernadine; and brother, Kenneth. Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, DeEtta and Gary Tenold of Belmond, and their children, Kim Ingwersen and her husband Mark of Spirit Lake; Dr. Scott Tenold and his wife Dr. Lisa of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Kristi Funk and her husband Joe of Newton, Dr. Steven Tenold and his wife Jennifer of Belmond; daughter, Dianna Erdman of Belmond, and her children, Lisa Conner and her husband, Patrick of Cumming, Jeff Erdman and his wife, Teresa Nutt of St. Paul, Minnesota, Karla Fischer and her husband, David of Cedar Rapids; son and daughter--in-law, Dr. Larry and Pat Schleusner of Las Vegas, Nevada, and their children, Dr. Todd Schleusner and his wife, Jen of Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Julie Schleusner and her fiance, Ben Knutson of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jenny King and her husband, Joe of Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Lisa Schleusner and her fiance, Dr. Eric Sakowski of Las Vegas, Nevada.
