Delbert L. Cornwell, 66, of Goodell, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. Funeral services were held Monday, March 18, 2002 at the United Church of Christ, Belmond with Pastor Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Burial was in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell. Music was provided by Marilyn Janssen, soloist, and Carol Severson, accompanist.Casket bearers were: Walter Gatton, Sam Hancock, Zach Hancock, Wayne Mason, Bob Moore, Denny VerHelst, Reuben Wenzel, Victoria Wenzel.

Delbert, the son of Harry and Gladys Buckingham Cornwell, was born May 13, 1935, in Independence. Delbert grew up in Waterloo, where he attended school. He later worked for Rath Meat Packing Company. He moved to the Belmond/Goodell area in 1977 where he was employed by Triggs Manufacturing and later Kor-Berts. Delbert married Wilma Burnett on November 9, 1978, in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Belmond and Goodell. Delbert was a member of the Belmond UCC Congregational Church. He enjoyed woodworking and TV westerns.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys. Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Goodell; his father, Harry Cornwell and Virgie of Waterloo; five daughters: Judy Churchill and husband, Douglas, of Phoenix, Arizona; Christy Hancock of Nixa, Missouri; Laura Wenzel and husband, Loren, of Belmond; Veronica Rains of Oelwein, and Michaela Graves and husband, Dennis, of Oelwein; two sons: Jeff Cornwell and wife, Donna, of Dysart, and Kelly Cornwell and wife, Shelly, of Independence; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Phyllis, Delores, and Peg; and brother, Larry and wife, Karen.
