Gary W. Porter, 59, of Belmond, died Friday, December 7, 2001. Funeral services were held Monday, December 10, 2001, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Lector was Veronica Benetti; Eucharistic ministers were Linda and Dick Kehrt, Deb Sloth, and Katie Martinek. Altar servers were Kelsey Mallen and Joe Bailey. Music was provided by Maxine Whitty, organist; Tony Wirtz, cantor. Casket bearers were Bill Johnson, Mark McNulty, Duane Mennenga, Bob Nelson, Jr., Mike Mennenga, Gary Ruka. Honorary casket bearers were Frank Henningsen, Randy Musselman, Bart Saylor, Alan Stone, and James Touslee. Ushers were Arthur Benetti and Hugh Kopriva. Interment was at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery near Belmond.
Gary W. Porter, the son of Russell E. and Blanche Tilton Porter, was born July 25, 1942, in Humboldt. At an early age Gary moved with his family to Belmond, where he attended Belmond schools, graduating in 1960. He then attended Mason City Junior College and later the University of Iowa. Gary was united in marriage with Nadyne Johnson on August 21, 1965, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Gary was employed by Oscar Mayer for 11 years, during which time the couple lived in St. Louis, Cedar Falls, Clear Lake, and Kansas City. The couple then moved to Kanawha briefly before moving to Belmond. He purchased his dad's Amoco jobbership in 1976. Gary enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell in 1991, infant brother, Dennis; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Claude and Ardie Johnson. Survivors are his wife, Nadyne; one daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Dale Spellman of Dallas Center; two sons, Chad of Belmond and Rusty of West Des Moines; three grandchildren, Darrin, Suzanne, and Jeremy; his mother, Blanche Porter of Belmond; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janis and Bob Flanagan of Waterloo, Gloria and Dave McLaughlin of Cascade; several nieces and nephews.
