Bernard Haupt, 79, of North Liberty, Iowa, formerly of Belmond, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City from complications following surgery. Funeral services were held Friday, June 29, 2001 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the Belmond Honor Guard. Music was provided by Eldoris Bunnell, organist and Marilyn Janssen, vocalist. Ushers were Loren Bamford and Francis Morris. Sign translation, Sheryl Hill. Casketbearers were Laurence Boller, Harley Friesleben, Roger Johnson, Harvey Friesleben, Roger Haupt and Verle Haupt.
Bernard, the son of Frank and Kate (Smith) Haupt, was born on a farm west of Goodell on June 7, 1922. He attended various country schools in the area. Later, he worked for different farmers in the area. He entered the Army on January 20, 1943. He was in the 86th Quartermaster Company and served in the Philippines at Luzon. On February 24, 1946, he received his honorable discharge. He received a bronze star, APT Ribbon, Good Conduct medal, the Victory ribbon, American Theater ribbon, Philippines Liberation medal, and Rifle Sharpshooter medal. On December 28, 1947, Bernard married Helen Petersen of Latimer. They farmed in the Goodell area. Bernard began working for General Mills in Belmond in 1949 and later Central Soya until his retirement in 1982. Helen and Bernard moved to Belmond in 1954. In 1992 they moved to Iowa City and then later made their home in North Liberty. Bernard enjoyed gardening, fishing an working outdoors. He loved caring for his lawn and landscaping.
Preceding him in death are his parents, one sister, Mildred Busemen and three brothers: Edward, Alvin and Leo. Survivors include his wife, Helen of North Liberty, two daughters; Joann of North Liberty and Sharon Ross and her husband, David and two granddaughters, Katherine and Emily of Dubuque; four sisters: Minni Olson, of Dows, Wilma Friesleben and her husband, Hartley of Clarion, Lorraine Johnson and her husband, Earl of Iowa Falls, Helen Ahrens of Rowan; four brothers: Robert of Belmond, Donald and his wife, Wava of Clarion, Raymond and his wife, Arhurine of Dows, Duane and his wife, Darilyn of Dows and many nieces and nephews.
