Jessie L. (Halfpap) Thayer, 80, of Rockwell, died May 30, 2001 at the Muse Norris Hospice Impatient Unit. Services were held June 5 at the Swaledale United Methodist Church.

Jessie was born August 18, 1920, the daughter of John and Lena (Gartz) Halfpap on a farm near Belmond. She graduated from Belmond High School in the class of 1938. At the age of 18 she began teaching in a country school and did so for the following six years. Jessie met Orval Thayer while attending high school in Belmond. They were united in marriage February 7, 1940 near Sioux Falls. They began their married lives farming near Belmond. In 1947 the couple moved to a farm near Burchinal which they farmed until retirement in 1997. Jessie enjoyed the farm animals and her garden, especially her flowers, which she shared with many. Jessie was a member of the Swaledale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers-in-law. Survivors include her husband; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lynn and Laura Thayer of Sheffield, Bill Thayer of Clear Lake; one daughter and son-in-law, April and Dave Sherwood of Rockwell; seven grandchildren; four step-children; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.
