Gerald "Red" Whipple, 78, of Belmond died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 1, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial was at the Belmond Cemetery. Military rites were given by the Belmond Honor Guard.
Gerald, the son of Grant and Ruby Parks Whipple, was born October 7, 1922 near Clarion. He attended country schools and graduated from Belmond High School in 1940. Gerald entered the U.S. Navy in August of 1941. He served on the USS Missoula during WW II. He was stationed at Brookland Navy Hospital and Navy Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshirre. As a corpsman he worked in the Navy dispensary. Red was also a member of Occupational Forces in North China. He received the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the American Defense Service Medal. Red was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Chief Pharmacist Mate. On September 27, 1947, Red was united in marriage to Anita Thompson in Trenton, Missouri. The couple made their home in Belmond where Red worked at General Mills/Central Soya. He retired in 1982. Anita and Red enjoyed traveling, and spent many winters in Las Vegas after his retirement. Red was a member of the General Mills Men's Club and the Belmond V.F.W. He volunteered as a Care Car Driver and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruth Ann; and one brother, Merle.
He is survived by his wife, Anita; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Joe Moore of Plymouth; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Lois Whipple of Britt, and Dennis and Linda Whipple of West Jordan, Utah; six grandchildren: Rob, Roxanne, Rick, Jason, Tyler and Jodi; ten great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Leslie (Whimp) and Shirley Whipple of Belmond; his mother-in-law, Helen Nelson of Belmond; three sisters-in-law, Betty Thompson of Belmond, Ruth Thompson of New York, and Iola Whipple of Mason City; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Duane and Linda Thompson of Belmond, Bill and Dory Thompson of Mason City, Jack and Marlys Thompson of Mesa, Arizona and Jim Wood of Greensboro, North Carolina.
