Debra Jayne Obrecht, 41, of Belmond, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Belmond Medical Center after a twenty two month battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church near Belmond with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Interment was at the St. Olaf Church Cemetery. Music was provided by Carol Severson, organist; Janyce Kinseth, accompanist; Steve and Joleen Rolland, vocal duet. Ushers were Raymond Burras, Alfred Johnson, and Rodney Toftey. Honorary casket bearers were Mike Laake, Daryn Obrecht, Lloyd Christenson, Kae Myers, Tim Griffin, Ralph Janssen, and Fred Wenzel, Jr. Casket bearers were Jared Rokke, B.J. Mayer, Jason Rokke, Steve Little, Josh Obrecht, and Steve Prohaska. Debra will be remembered for her love of others, her sense of humor, her great compassion for her patients and their families. She accepted her fate with dignity and grace.
Debra Ellingston was born September 21, 1959, at Belmond, the daughter of Raymond and Rebecca (Janssen) Ellingston. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Olaf Lutheran Church of rural Belmond where she remained a life time member. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1978; received her LPN from NIACC in Mason City; certification as an Operating Room Technician from DMACC in Ankeny; and her Associate Arts degree as a registered nurse from NIACC in Mason City. She married DaLon Obrecht at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on July 31, 1982. She worked for many years at the Belmond Community Hospital and most recently at the Belmond Health Care Center where a nursing scholarship has been established in her name.
Deb is preceded in death by her grandparents, Elling and Nettie Ellingston and Herman and Blanche Janssen; and her father-in-law, Edward Obrecht. Deb is survived by her three children: Jeffery, 16, David, 13, and Katie, 9, all at home; her parents, Raymond and Rebecca Ellingston; one sister and brother-in-law, Charlotta and Paul Rokke of Belmond; one brother, Lynn Ellingston of Belmond; the children's father, DaLon Obrecht; mother-in-law, Evelyn Obrecht of Belmond; brothers-in-law, DaDean Obrecht of Chicago, Illinois, and Dana Obrecht of Warrensburg, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Denise Mayer and her husband, Keith of Osage, Claire Obrecht, Heather McLemore and Brenda Benson; nieces and nephews, Austin and Brianna Ellingston, Jared and Jason Rokke, Gina and Steve Prohaska, Daryn, Josh and Melissa Obrecht and her fiance, Jon Barkema, B.J. and Stacy Mayer, Jennifer and Steve Little; great niece and nephew, Kaitlyn and Lucas Prohaska; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Wright County Hospice, or a 529 plan established for her children's college education.
