Bert O’Neel, 85, of Clarion, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 9th at the First United Methodist Church in Clarion. Rev. O. Donovan Morrison officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Willim Funeral Home of Clarion was in charge of the arrangements.

Bert O’Neel was born March 20, 1918, in Monticello, Minnesota, the son of Carl LeRoy and Grace Mahoney O’Neel. As a young child, Bert moved with his family to the Galt-Dows area where he attended school and graduated from Dows High School. On October 4, 1941, Bert was united in marriage with Maxine Chapman in Princeton, Missouri. Living in rural Clarion for 50 years, they raised livestock and farmed over 500 acres. Bert and Maxine continued to farm after moving to town in 1986. Bert was a 4-H leader for 20 years and enjoyed working with the children on their projects. In 1965, the State Mechanical Corn Picking Contest was hosted by the family on their farm. Bert was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarion, serving several years as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was involved in various renovation projects at the church and was responsible for the mowing and snow removal at the church for 30 years.

He is survived by his children; Carolyn Threlkeld and husband, Dennis of Britt; Mitchell O’Neel and wife, Barbara of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Stupka of Clarion. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; and two brothers.
