Hubert Ellsworth “Hub” Colby, 94, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, died Friday, April 11, 2003. Funeral services were held Monday, April 14th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Belmond. Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial was in Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone. Hub Colby was born July 21, 1908, in Lake Mills, the son of Dr. Joseph E. and Millie (Ethel) Colby. He attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School and then attended Iowa State College. He was united in marriage to Faye Arlene Ferris on July 7, 1930, at Princeton, Missouri. Hub was a police officer at Joice for a time and then was employed as a conservation officer for the state of Iowa for 12 years, commencing his tenure as an officer at Ledges State Park in Boone. He then spent time in the Sheldon area and later served as a conservation officer in Wright County. Hub was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He served stateside in Peoria, Illinois, during World War II. Upon completion of his service in the military he was employed as a supervisor for General Mills in Belmond from 1949-1965. When Central Soya acquired the Belmond location he and his wife moved to Chicago, Illinois where he continued with General Mills as a plant entomologist from 1965 until retirement in 1970. They then returned to Iowa where they spent a short time in Lake Mills and them moved back to Belmond. Hub was a long time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belmond and was a member of the VFW. He became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in November 2000, where his wife also lives.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Colby, of Belmond; one daughter, Harriet “Nubby” Woodin and husband, Richard of Clarion; one son, David and wife, Kay of Silver Bay, Minnesota; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
