Born July 13, 1886 at Bradgate, the eighth child of James and Mattie Lovrien, Neva Mattie married Lester Behrns and one daughter was born of this union. Neva graduated from high school in Bradgate and attended Iowa State Normal College, Cedar Falls to prepare for teaching. Neva became a life-time career teacher, leaving that profession only to retire.

Neva was widowed after a few years of marriage and was left with the responsibility of raising her infant daughter. Her father-in-law invited Neva to make her home with him so he could share in the raising of his granddaughter. This proved to be a good arrangement and it continued until Mr. Behrns died in 1945.

Though a fragile appearing woman, Neva seems to have inherited the toughness of her wisp of a mother. She has weathered many a storm and survived amazingly well, always retaining her quiet and gentle independence and facing each day with determination and hope.
