Junior “Jay” Nelson Methus, 87, of Northwood, died Friday (Jan. 13, 2006) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with the Rev. Barbara Wills officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. by the Northern Light Masonic Lodge No. 266 of Northwood at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.

Junior “Jay” Nelson Methus was born on June 14, 1918, in Kidder, S.D., the son of Ole and Elsie (Purdy) Methus. He was baptized on Dec. 15, 1918, in Kidder and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation on May 23, 1932, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown. He received his education in Hanlontown, graduating from Hanlontown High School in 1936. He was united in marriage to Ernestine Marie Shields on December 27, 1939, in Hanlontown, and to this union two daughters were born: Janice and Marcia. Ernestine preceded him in death on Aug. 24, 1991.

Jay began his farming operation on March 1, 1940, two miles south of Joice and continued to farm when he moved east of Northwood on March 1, 1942. He also farmed west of Northwood until his retirement from farming on Oct. 19, 1950.

Jay owned and operated the International Implement Company in Hanlontown from 1950 until 1955 when he moved to Northwood continuing in the implement business until 1962. In 1962, Jay began his career in real estate and farm Management in Northwood, which he continued until his retirement in 2004.

He was united in marriage to Genevieve (Butler) Johnson on Sept. 5, 1993, at First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

He loved farming, and enjoyed golfing, fishing up north, dancing, traveling and spending winters in Arizona. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Northwood Country Club, Northern Light Masonic Lodge No. 266 in Northwood, and was a 32nd-Degree Mason in Cedar Rapids.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Genevieve Methus of Northwood; a daughter, Marcia Young and her husband, Bill of LeMars; five grandchildren: Steven Young and his wife, Karie, of Algona, Stephanie Early and her husband, Matthew, of Sioux City, Scott Young and his wife, Jessica, of Swisher, Monica Bolin of Crete, Neb., and Derek Bolin of Los Angeles, Calif.; four great-grandchildren: Ethan and Ashlin Young and Aidan and Isaac Early; a brother, Gordon Methus of Rogers, Ark., as well as other relatives and many friends.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ernestine Methus on Aug. 24, 1991; and a daughter, Janice Tatum on Jan. 15, 2000
